How often should I have an eye test?
For most people, it is recommended to have an eye test every 2 years. There are some people that need to be seen more frequently and if that is the case your optometrist will let you know.
How much does an eye examination cost at Biggs Opticians?
Our standard eye examination costs £50, but for some people this is covered under the NHS. Our enhanced eye examination, including OCT, costs £75. If you get a NHS test, our enhanced eye examination costs £25.
Am I entitled to a free NHS eye test?
Everyone over 60 and under 16 are entitled to an NHS test every 2 years. If you are in full-time education and aged 17 or 18 this also applies. What does an NHS-funded eye test cover compared to a private one?
There is no difference between an NHS and private eye test at Biggs Opticians. Both are comprehensive examinations including checking of the visual acuity, binocular vision and the health of the eyes.
What is included in your enhanced eye examination with OCT scanning?
Our enhanced eye examination includes everything in our standard examination, plus an OCT scan of the retina which will be analysed and explained by your optometrist. The OCT is a deep scan of the retinal tissues and can aid in the early detection of eye conditions including macular degeneration and glaucoma as well as providing peace of mind about the health of the back of the eye.
Are children’s eye examinations free?
Yes, all children under the age of 16 get NHS funded eye tests. This is extended to 18 if they are in full-time education. For more information see the NHS website: Free NHS eye tests and optical vouchers – NHS
What happens during a comprehensive eye examination?
During a comprehensive eye examination your optometrist will start by asking you questions about your eyes and your vision, your general health and any relevant family history, and your current glasses and visual needs. Following that, your eyes will be examined to check that they are healthy and that you can see well, if necessary, using lenses in front of the eyes to help you see more clearly. Sometimes more tests will be required, these will be carried out on the day if possible or you will be booked back in if necessary. Once the examination is finished your optometrist will explain the findings of the examination and any recommendations they have made. If you have any questions, they will be happy to answer these as well.
How long does an eye test appointment take?
This can vary depending on what is needed, but we allow up to 40 minutes for each eye test.
How do I book an eye test at your Deal or Dover practice?
The easiest way to book is online or to call the practice of your choice. If you are in the area we would be delighted to see you in person too, should you prefer to book your appointment that way.
Should I have my eyes tested more often if I have diabetes or a family history of glaucoma?
This is highly dependent on circumstances. The NHS allow for eye tests to be carried out yearly for people with diabetes and people over 40 with a parent or sibling with glaucoma. However, this is a minimum allowance and isn’t necessary in all cases for example when you are under a diabetic retinal screening service or a glaucoma screening service. When you have you eyes tested, your optometrist will recommend when they need to see you next and why. If you’re unsure about the reasons, please feel free to ask.
Do you test for conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration during a routine eye test?
Yes, all eye tests carried out at Biggs Opticians will involve a comprehensive examination of the health of your eyes, including but not limited to glaucoma and macular degeneration.
What should I bring with me to my eye examination?
We always recommend that you bring any existing glasses or contact lenses you wear, a list of current medication and anything else you feel might be relevant. For example, hospital letters relevant to your eye examination, any specialised reading material and even a note pad if you want to take notes during your test.
How do I book a contact lens consultation?
As long as you have an up-to-date sight test, you can book on our website for a contact lens consultation. Otherwise, we would advise phoning us or popping into your preferred branch.
Am I suitable for contact lenses?
For most people, contact lenses are an excellent alternative to glasses. If you are unsure at all or would like more information, simply book to see one of our optometrists or our contact lens optician and we would be happy to help.
What types of contact lenses do you offer (daily, monthly, toric, multifocal)?
We offer all types of soft contact lenses: daily, two weekly and monthly in spherical, toric and multifocal. We also fit RGP (hard) contact lenses.
Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?
Most levels of astigmatism can now be accommodated using contact lenses, even if you need reading glasses.
Can I wear contact lenses if I need varifocals or reading correction?
In most cases contact lenses are suitable when you need a reading correction or varifocals. There are various types available now with modern lens designs.
How much do contact lenses cost, and how does the contact lens scheme work?
The cost of contact lenses varies depending on what you need and how often you use them. With BiggsPlan, all appointments are covered and there is a 20% discount on your contact lenses whether you buy as you need them or get them every month with a regular payment.
What’s the difference between daily disposable and monthly contact lenses?
Daily disposable contact lenses are inserted and removed once and can be worn for up to a day. Monthly lenses are reusable and can be worn daily, removed and cleaned at night for up to a calendar month.
How often should I replace my contact lenses and cases?
Contact lenses must be replaced as per their stated modality ie. Daily lenses every day, two weekly every fortnight, and monthlies every month. Cases should be replaced monthly or if there are visible signs of wear or damage.
Can I sleep in my contact lenses?
Generally, contact lenses are not suitable for sleeping in. There are some lenses that are designed to be slept in, but this isn’t suitable for everyone and increases the risk of infection.
I’ve never worn contact lenses before — what does the fitting process involve?
Once you have an up-to-date sight test, your optician will order some trial lenses based on the shape of your eye and your prescription. You will then be shown how to insert and remove the lenses and the ways to care for them. Following a week of wearing them you will be seen for a follow up appointment to ensure the lenses are suitable and you are happy with the vision and comfort.
Do you offer contact lens aftercare appointments?
Yes, we offer aftercare appointments for existing wearers. If you haven’t been to Biggs Opticians before, please ensure you bring copies of your up-to-date sight test and contact lens specification as well as the lenses you wear currently.
Can teenagers or children wear contact lenses?
Most children and teenagers can wear contact lenses without problems. Please discuss this with your optician if you are unsure if your child is suitable.
What is OCT scanning and how is it different from a standard eye test?
An OCT scan uses light to see through the layers of the retina to ensure everything looks normal and healthy. It is an excellent addition to a thorough eye test, but not a replacement of it.
Is an OCT scan painful or uncomfortable?
OCT scans are non-invasive and use light to visualise the layers of the retina and other ocular structures. Because of this there is no pain involved.
Do I need an OCT scan, and who should consider one?
An OCT scan is an excellent addition to a thorough eye test because it can be used to see and measure structures that would otherwise not be possible. Anyone who is concerned about the health of their eyes or would like peace of mind that their eyes are healthy should consider one. Sometimes your optometrist will also recommend one if they are concerned about anything they see during your eye test.
How much does an OCT scan cost at Biggs Opticians?
An OCT scan costs £25 as part of an eye examination but is included in BiggsPlan free of charge.
Is OCT scanning available on the NHS?
The NHS fee does not cover the cost of an OCT.

What eye conditions can OCT scanning detect early (glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy)?
OCT scanning can help in the detection of glaucoma, macular dystrophies, macular degeneration, cystoid macular oedema, central serous retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy and other conditions that affect the retina or optic nerve.
How long does an OCT scan take?
The OCT scan is part of your eye test and is generally done during your appointment and usually takes about 10 minutes.
Is OCT scanning worth paying for if I have no eye problems?
Many people have OCT scans regularly to ensure their eyes are as healthy as they think. Certain eye conditions can go unnoticed for many years before they become symptomatic.
How is OCT scanning included as part of BiggsPlan?
As a BiggsPlan member, there is no extra change for an OCT scan. This way we can take the very best care of your eyes every time you have your eye test without and extra charge.
What is myopia management?
Myopia management is concerned with preventing a child’s eye growing too long so that they become increasingly myopic or short sighted. It is an established field that has a lot of scientific studies behind it which is also improving every year.
Why does slowing myopia progression matter?
Myopia is a condition where the eye keeps growing during normal growth when it should have stopped naturally. With a larger eye, stronger glasses are needed, which is inconvenient as well as potentially expensive throughout a lifetime. A longer eye is also more likely to develop conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular degeneration and early cataracts. If we can slow the rate of progression as much as possible, we can lessen these risks.
At what age should myopia management start?
Myopia management should start as soon as the eyes become myopic. Early intervention is key to preventing long term issues.
What treatment options are available?
There are now many options available for myopia management. Optically there are spectacle and contact lenses that create a specific type of blur or reduced contrast in the periphery of the vision as a way to slow down the continued growth of the eye. Ortho-K is a version of this where the child sleeps in a special, hard contact lens and remove it during the day so they can see clearly without glasses or contacts whilst gaining the benefit of myopia control.
There is new evidence that low dose atropine drops in the eyes can also be helpful for myopia management also.
There are also lifestyle changes that can help slow down myopia progression. For example, getting more time outside, making sure reading is done in good light and not too close to the face, and ensuring that any glasses prescribed are worn full time.
Will my child need to wear treatment lenses forever?
Myopia management generally stops at 18 as that is the maximum age of the available studies. Myopia usually stabilises after the age of 25 and for some people this happens earlier, with very slow progression usually seen after the age of 18.
Is myopia management covered by the NHS?
At the moment, the NHS does not cover myopia management.
Can lifestyle changes help control myopia?
Yes. Spending more time outdoors, minimising screen time, reading in good light and wearing prescribed glasses if needed full time all help control myopia.
How do I know if my child needs myopia management?
Any child who is developing myopia could potentially benefit from this intervention. If you are unsure, please book in to speak to one of our opticians.
How often will my child need check-ups during treatment?
This can vary from 3 months up to a year depending on how stable the prescription is and the age of the child but averagely children will need to be seen every 6 months with this type of treatment.
Is myopia management suitable for adults too?
Currently, all studies for myopia management only include children under the age of 18. However, we know myopia usually only progresses until the age of 25. It is possible that myopia management could help for people over 18 also, but there is no evidence for this in the literature.

What lens options do you offer (varifocal, blue light filter, photochromic, anti-glare, thin & light)?
We offer both single vision and multifocal lenses. Multifocal options include varifocals, occupational lenses, bifocals and boost lenses. All lenses come with the option of upgrading to a thinner material, or adding an anti-reflection coating, photochromic technology or tints if required.
What’s the difference between varifocals and bifocals
Bifocal lenses have two distinct areas of vision which are divided by a line. The top portion is usually set for distance vision whilst the lower segment caters for near tasks, such as reading. Bifocals remove the need for two pairs of glasses, and some people prefer to have the defined reading segment for ease of use.
Varifocal lenses (also known as progressive lenses) have a gradual change in prescription as you lower your gaze. Like the bifocal, you look towards the bottom of the lens for near tasks, however there is no distinct line – the prescription is blended.

How long does it take to get new glasses made?
The lead-time on prescription spectacles is dependent on the prescription and lens type. Single vision spectacles usually take around 7 working days, and multifocal spectacles usually take around 10-14 working days. Please note that these lead-times may vary.
There is an express lens service option for quicker delivery, and this is subject to availability. Please get in touch to enquire.
Can I use my NHS optical voucher towards designer frames?
Yes, the NHS optical voucher can be used towards any frame of your choice. The voucher value can be deducted from the price of your glasses.
Do you offer eye tests and glasses at both your Deal and Dover practices?

Can you repair or adjust my existing glasses?
Yes, we can repair and adjust spectacles. We will first examine the condition of the frames and give you advice on how we can service them. Please contact us to enquire about spectacle repairs and adjustments.
Do you offer a warranty or guarantee on spectacles?
Spectacle frames hold a guarantee against manufacturing defects or faults. The warranty period is set by each individual manufacturer. Some premium lens coatings also have a guarantee against wear and tear.
Please note that warranties do not cover accidental damage – terms and conditions apply.
What should I do if my new glasses don’t feel right?
It can take some time to adjust to your new prescription or frame. If you’ve had a change in the lenses, the vision can certainly feel strange at first. If you feel like you aren’t adapting well to your new glasses or need an adjustment, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Do you stock frames for rimless, semi-rimless and full-frame styles?
We stock titanium rimless frames from the brands Stepper and Lindberg. There is wide range of semi-rimless (also known as supra) frames and full-rim frames to choose from. We have all styles in various shapes, sizes and materials – there is something for everyone.

Can sunglasses be made with my prescription?
Yes, most sunglass frames are suitable for glazing with prescription. We offer both single vision and multifocal tinted lenses. There are various tint colours and depths to choose from, as well as the option to have the lenses polarised.

Can I get varifocal prescription sunglasses?
Yes, varifocal lenses are available with a range of tint colours and depths. There is also the option to have them polarised if you wish.
Are polarised sunglasses better for driving?
Polarised sunglasses are good for driving in bright conditions as they block the horizontal glare which is reflected from road surfaces and cars. This makes your vision more comfortable and can improve contrast.
Polarised lenses can affect the viewing of LCD displays inside certain cars, so it’s important to be mindful of this when opting for polarised lenses.
Do I need UV-protective sunglasses even on cloudy days?
Yes, sunglasses should be worn all year round. Even on a cloudy day, harmful UV rays pass through the clouds, and your eyes still face exposure. Long-term UV exposure can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration and photokeratitis (corneal sunburn).

What makes children’s frames different from adult frames (durability, fit, materials)?
Children’s frames are not simply a smaller version of an adult frame. As their facial anatomy is still developing, they require specially designed frames to fit their unique facial parameters. Our frames for babies and toddlers are carefully created using lightweight and flexible materials.
Do children get their eyes tested at school?
Some schools offer an eye screening service, but this does not replace a full eye examination. It is important to have a thorough test with an optometrist which will include eye health checks and a full refraction.
What happens if my child loses or breaks their glasses?
Children under the age of 16 are entitled to an NHS optical repair or replacement voucher. This voucher helps towards the cost of replacing or repairing your child’s glasses if they are lost or damaged.

Yes, we offer prescription swimming goggles and sports eyewear. We have a variety of frame options to suit your child’s chosen sport or activity.
How can I help my child get used to wearing glasses?
Many children may not want to wear their spectacles at first as it can be a big change for them. In lots of cases, they are apprehensive about how the glasses may look, and that is why we will help to find frames that your child loves. To encourage wear, we will ensure the glasses fit well and are comfortable.
